To the Moon
and Back Again

In 2018, the Museum of Science and Industry celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission, the first crewed spacecraft to leave Earth’s orbit, circle the Moon and return safely back to Earth. After the mission was complete, the Apollo 8 Command Module “landed” at MSI in 1971, where it remains today. The Museum offered a number of new exhibits, events and even a black-tie gala to celebrate the historic milestones achieved in 1968 and the mission’s three crew members.

The letterforms in “MOON” come together in an extraordinarily harmonious way. While the word is not quite a palindrome, the repetition of the apices and vertices in the letters “M” and “N” balance beautifully with the round counters in the center “Os.” The central infinity symbol tells two stories, paying homage to Apollo 8 and the figure-8 path of the mission’s orbit.

The printed invitation for the gala event used silver ink and was packaged in a silver mylar envelope to complete the space-themed look. On the night of the event, the program book and menu at each guest’s place setting unfolded into a 22” x 24” poster of the surface of the moon.

Deliverables included both print and digital elements (web graphics, emails, digital presentations, large format signage, and night-of-event menus) including the pieces featured below.
